Scaling Up Women’s Sunflower Business
-
Local solution
Through this project expansion, 100 more single mothers will be equipped with the means to improve their lives through sunflower farming, while also joining a village savings scheme to overcome poverty and social exclusion.
The young single mothers often face significant barriers to education, which in turn limits their opportunities for a stable life and decent living conditions for themselves and their children. The stigma and rejection they experience as single parents further intensify their vulnerability. This leads to a cycle of poverty, as they struggle to access income generating activities, leaving them and their children to live in precarious conditions. With the support of local authorities, women from nearby villages sought our assistance, motivated by the positive outcomes of our previous project.
Building on the success of our current initiative, we will select and train 100 single mothers in sunflower oil production, dividing them into four groups of 25 each to establish their own production units. Additionally, they will receive entrepreneurship training for 8 weeks to equip them with the skills necessary for business growth. To further support their development, we will facilitate their access to local markets and clients, as well as connect them with Village Saving Loans Groups, where they can save money, access loans, and expand their business ventures. To address the unique challenges faced by single mothers, including stigma and rejection, we will provide specialised training in family relations, values, and discipline using a positive parenting approach for up to 6 months. This comprehensive approach will empower these women with essential life skills and help them build a stronger foundation for themselves and their families. By extending this program to 100 more single mothers, we aim to create a more sustainable and prosperous future for these women and their children.
With over 6 years of experience working with similar project participants, TAI has developed a deep understanding of the unique challenges they face. Our extensive expertise in providing economic strengthening, sociological support, and education has allowed us to tailor our approach to effectively address the needs of these women. Our staff who are specifically trained and capacitated in this area, are equipped to provide high-quality support and guidance.
Lives improved100 single mothers will learn how to produce sunflower oil, and become stakeholders in their own production units. The women will gain a reliable source of income. This income will enable them to provide for their households’ basic needs, including food, health care and education for their families.
In turn, 400 family members will benefit indirectly from the financial stability brought about by the single mothers’ sunflower oil business income generated.
Community impactEstablishing the sunflower oil business will bring about a profound shift in the community’s social dynamics. It breaks down barriers and promotes equality and inclusivity for single mothers ensuring that they are treated with dignity and respect. As a result, women’s rights will be protected, and their human dignity will be restored. The community will become a more just and equitable place, where all individuals have the opportunity to thrive

“I am deeply grateful to the TAI team for their support. As a victim of teen pregnancy and single mother, my own family and the community looked down on me. I felt ashamed, depressed, and struggled to connect with my child. But with the help of the TAI counsellor and the group, I received psychosocial support that changed my life. I broke free from depression and gained the confidence to transform my life and pursue my dreams once more. Today, I am proud to say that I am not just a single mother, but a flower that has bloomed – strong, resilient, and full of hope. ”
