Project Update: Livelihoods of Children with Severe Disabilities

With  €10,483 donated by Stichting Talent and Spykman Foundation in partnership with iMPACT direct, Vision of the Blind Kenya is currently implementing the “Livelihoods of Children with Severe Disabilities” project, aimed at empowering parents and caregivers of children with severe disabilities. The project provides essential guidance and counselling, and business training to enhance economic independence and improve the quality of life for both caregivers and their children.

Progress Made

As of September 12, the following activities have been achieved:

  1. Participant Engagement:
    • A total of 20 parents and caregivers have been engaged. These participants were selected through targeted outreach initiatives by mid-July.
    • Assessments revealed that 14 participants own struggling businesses (e.g., fish mongering, firewood selling, liquid soap selling, and milk selling). The remaining 6 participants are currently reliant on casual employment.
  2. Counselling Sessions:
    • A 2-week guidance and counselling program was successfully conducted, focusing on promoting understanding, acceptance, and effective support strategies for disabilities.
  3. Business Training:
    • A series of business training sessions began in mid-August and are ongoing.
    • Training modules cover various topics, including business ideation, planning, marketing, and effective bookkeeping.

Upcoming Activities

  • The business training program is set to conclude in the coming month.
  • Participants will receive necessary business stock and resources to facilitate the launch of their own businesses.

Expected Outcomes

  • By the end of the project, it is anticipated that all 20 parents and caregivers will achieve economic independence, enabling them to provide better support for their children with severe disabilities.
  • An estimated 60 family members are expected to benefit from increased household income generated by participants.
  • The project aims to promote greater awareness in the community regarding disabilities and entrepreneurship.

Community Impact

  • Participants are expected to extend their knowledge by training an additional 2 parents or caregivers each in business skills, thereby enhancing community capacity for entrepreneurship and understanding of disability issues.
  • Improved business skills will create new economic engagement opportunities within the community.
  • The project is working towards fostering a more inclusive environment for individuals with disabilities, promoting their confidence and participation in societal activities.

Observed Changes

  • Networking and Collaboration: Participants are forming networks for advocacy and support within the community.
  • Increased Confidence: Participants report heightened confidence in pursuing economic opportunities and engaging in community activities.
  • Enhanced Business Management: Newly acquired skills are being applied to manage existing and future business ventures more effectively.
  • Awareness and Advocacy: There is a notable increase in community awareness and support for individuals living with disabilities.
  • Civic Engagement: Participants are becoming more proactive in advocating for their rights and seeking necessary support.

Conclusion

The “Livelihoods of Children with Severe Disabilities” project is demonstrating positive progress in empowering caregivers and enhancing the overall well-being of children with severe disabilities. The supportive framework provided by Stichting Talent and Spykman Foundation, along with the diligent efforts of Vision of the Blind Kenya, is paving the way for sustainable change. As we move forward, the focus will remain on concluding the training sessions, facilitating business startups, and ensuring the long-term impact of our initiatives.
